Keys for Home and Work
Help!I've got way too many keys on my key chain and a bunch of old keys I don't know what to do with. Any suggestions? Thanks, John
Hi John,
I don't like fumbling through my keys at the door or once again saying, "I know I left them right here." Here’s my suggestion:
- Place all house and car keys on a chain or key holder.
- Set up a special spot for your daily keys. I know that it's convenient to hang keys on decorative hooks by the back door, but that doesn't strike me as being very secure. Instead, keep them in a covered bowl or drawer in the kitchen, in your office desk, or in a tray on your bedroom dresser.
- Carry keys in a zippered compartment, clipped to a ring in your purse, clipped to a belt, or inside your wallet.
- Arrange your daily keys in the order that you use them. For example, first the car remote beeper, then the car door key, followed by keys to the house screen door, deadbolt lock, and door lock.
- Don't haul around keys for your home desk, file cabinet, or tool shed. Keep those keys on separate keychains at home.
- Dump the keys for old luggage and the screen door that you no longer have.
- Label duplicate keys and store them in an envelope or in plastic sheets with slots for keys.
- Place mystery keys in an envelope. Who knows, you might eventually figure out what they're for.
- Keep all your work keys on an extra large key ring, on a plastic arm wrap, or on a belt keychain.
- Store work keys in your briefcase, in a tote bag, or in your desk drawer.
- Keep keys in order for the building door, locked alarm box, office door, desk, file cabinet, and rest room.
- If it will help, label each key or use colored plastic key covers for each area, such as green for office keys, red for the conference room key, and blue for the storage room key.
- I saw something on the Internet about painting keys with nail polish. Maybe I'll take it to the next step and coordinate the key colors with my wardrobe. Or not.
